Diablo II & Diablo I edit edit source In the older Diablo games, 'Ethereal' is primarily associated with the attribute of some Diablo II items that are called specifically ethereal. These items deal 50% more damage or provide 50% more defense, at the cost of 55% less durability and no option to repair them. This recipe will fully repair an item without visiting the NPC blacksmith. This is useful to avoid a trip to town, or to repair some weapons that have astronomical repair costs, due to irregularities in how the game determines the price for repairs. Does not work on ethereal items. Charges on an item are not replenished. Ethereal items are good to give to your hirelings, since ethereal items do not lose durability when used by a hireling. A way to be safe while your mercenary attacks a monster. Walk back into town, when you have a monster following you. You can socket a normal ethereal item, and it will remain ethereal, and gain sockets just as a non-ethereal item would. In Diablo 2 version 1.11 and 1.11b, there is a bug regarding the socketing of ethereal armors and shields. Ethereal armors and shields are assigned a 50% bonus to their base defense rating when dropped.

Repair in Diablo 2
In Diablo 2, repairing is the means by which typically costly spell charges are restored to equipment.
A Ral and an armor piece combined in the Horadric Cube will result in the armor being repaired. Orts can be similarly used to repair weapons. As the repair cost of very high level armor can be many thousands of gold, it can actually be easier to trade for a Ral than collect that much gold.

In Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction there are Ethereal Items, these items are more powerful than the non-ethereal version of the item. However, they can not be repaired by any NPC.A good suggestion is to give them to a mercenary, because then the item can't lose durabillity points.
